The
Gogebic Range Northwood's Neighbors Club (f/k/a Newcomers Club)
The
Gogebic Range Northwood's Neighbors (f/k/a Newcomers Club)
celebrate their five-year anniversary in January 2008. It's
been a great club with people from school-aged children to early
retirees who have joined. It's been a whole lot of fun. What
does our group do? We have fun exploring the area! Activities
have included golf outings, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, attending
local theatre events as a group, waterfalls tour, touring a
greenhouse, beer tasting, chili potluck, touring a winery,
volunteered at the Great Lakes Renaissance Faire, 4th of July
Celebration, Kayaking on Lake Superior, Lake Gogebic picnic,
hiking at Porcupine Mountains, entering scarecrow contest at
Bessemer Pumpkin Fest, Black River Harbor Deep Sea Fishing Trip
and Annual Picnic, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and a
snowshoe trip to Little Sand Bay at the Apostle Islands to see
the winter snow (sea) caves!

On
behalf of the Gogebic Range Northwoods Neighbors Club (f/k/a
Newcomers Club), we would like to extend a warm welcome to
you.
The purpose
of this club is to provide an opportunity for the making of new
friendships and to contribute to the community. We would like
to help you get acquainted and involved. We are a social, civic
and charitable club open to anyone living in Gogebic County or
nearby Wisconsin towns and surrounding areas. No special
invitation is necessary, just give us a call.
If you've relocated, our
primary goal is to help you find new friends, provide
information about this beautiful part of Michigan, help you get
settled, and make your move as simple and enjoyable as
possible. We will host coffee get-togethers at various members'
homes, these gatherings are small and informal. Our club will
also support several local charities, and an annual "clothing
and stuff" donation drive for St. Vincent DePaul and for area
schools and save Campbell Soup labels and Box Tops for
Education. We've put together a list of activities and hope
members can get together and participate in many recreational
and social opportunities. New ideas and new people are always
welcome, so bring them along.
Not exactly
new? Many of our members have joined after living here a while
or are long time residents who enjoy making new friends and
sharing their knowledge of living here. Whether you are new in
the area or looking for new adventure, we're here to help. The
Northwoods Neighbors Club brings together an eclectic group of
people of all ages and from diverse interests, cultures and
talents. Our current members are from Ironwood, Bessemer and
Lake Gogebic, we're hoping to include Northern Wisconsin friends
too.

JANUARY 11, 2003 Club Notes:
Fifteen people met at Black River Crossing Bed & Breakfast which
hosted an informal open house to new members for two hours.
A snowshoe get together is planned for the next social which
will be held on Sunday February 9th at the Black
River Lodge, located a few miles north of Airport Road in
Ironwood. Members are also welcome to bring cross-country skis;
however, the trails are wooded and not track set.
There was discussion about having a potluck once a month with a
dinner theme hosted at a members home. Names, addresses and
emails were collected for a mailing list, new members were
encouraged to spread the word and invite others to the next
function. A notice will be published in the paper. An
established list of about 25 members was an encouraging start
for the new group. New ideas and upcoming events will be
discussed briefly at the February social. A survey will be
emailed to all members soon in regards to club activities and
interests. Feel free to join our email list, we'd be happy to
keep you informed.
FEBRUARY
9, 2003 Club Notes: Approximately 20 members of the Newcomers
Club attended the snowshoe outing at the Black River Lodge. The
sun was shining but temperatures hovered around ten above, it
was a bit chilly and windy, but all agreed it was a worthwhile
and refreshing trip. All were dressed appropriately and warmed
up easily as we made our way into the trees toward the Black
River. Most of the trail had been packed by a snowmobile prior
to our trek. The river was our halfway point, it was completely
snow covered and looked like a wide road.

Kim, from the Ironwood
Chamber of Commerce led the group back to the main lodge taking
a fresh trail through deep snow for a distance before reaching
the packed trail again. "Jabo" reported that we went about 1.7
miles according to his GPS. Good thing he had it with him, we
were assured to find our way back.
The group met for a short meeting inside with appetizers, then
mingled for an hour or so. A potluck dinner will be held on
March 22nd at a members home. More details on the potluck will
be posted soon.
Survey will be emailed to you as an attachment, please print off
your computer, fill in and mail back to me along with your dues.
Thanks!
Arlene Schneller

The monthly Newcomers
Club meeting in June was a summer picnic and a chartered
deep sea fishing trip at Black River Harbor. Our captain was
Jim Johnson of the 38-foot ship "Jolly Roger". Jim has been
a charter fisherman for nearly 38 years and does a beautiful
job and can he clean fish fast! He was helpful and his boat
was wonderfully equipped. The weather couldn't have been
better and the lake was glass calm. Everyone brought warm
clothes but Lora Vomhof was the only one that "chanced it"
with a pair of shorts under her long pants and she took in
the warm sunshine.

Picnic at Black River Harbor on June 1, 2003 was a
great hit. We had some wonderful conversations and
great food! |
 |
This was the morning
crew who launched at 7:00 a.m.; they came back with
4 nice fish. |
 |
The afternoon crew
came back with NINE fish and bragging rights: a
beautiful Brown Trout, three Coho Salmon and some
beautiful Lake Trout. |
